Harper's Bazaar (UK) - - Bazaar - Photographed at Sarabande Foundation with Esna Su’s The Burden I (2017)

‘Esna Su was one of the first applicants for a residency at Sarabande Foundation and I bought The Burden I when she was working with us. She was born in Turkey, close to one of the largest Syrian refugee camps, where there were thousands of families who had fled their homes with nothing. This piece represents the empty sacks they carried with them. She spends weeks scoring the leather, knitting it together, moulding it around a collection of objects and letting it dry. When she removes what’s inside, you are left with simply the empty shells: the ghosts of belongings past. It’s a very emotive piece. The leather is tactile, warm and natural and the organic shape is soft, but the meaning is haunting and tragically modern. It is all the more beautiful because I know Esna. She is full of love and this is a very personal story to her.’
