BEST FOR GOURMET DINING PUBLIC
The veteran hotelier Ian Schrager has triumphed again with his latest vision, the Public hotel – a streamlined stay where you check yourself in via your phone, and room service is replaced by Louis, a café serving delicious take-away in paper bags. There are two other excellent restaurants – Diego, whose dishes have a Latin flavour, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Public Kitchen – plus a quartet of bars. Outside, the colourful Christmas windows on Fifth Avenue and Central Park’s iceskating rink are within easy reach, and you can shop for hand-blown-glass tree decorations at the John Derian store, just a five-minute walk away. rachel louise brown
