Expert advice for perfect wedding perfume, hair and make-up
Arabella Preston
Co-founder of Votary skincare ‘I didn’t have facial treatments in the run-up to my wedding, but I did take good care of my skin; I gave myself regular gentle exfoliations by way of a hot-cloth cleansing ritual, followed by plenty of moisturisers packed with natural oils. We got
married in December so I was conscious that my skin might need extra TLC. I was training to be a make-up artist at the time, so I would do my wedding “look” whenever I was going out, as I didn’t
want to open a brand-new bag of make-up on the day and end up not feeling like myself. I spent a lot of
time trying to find the perfect mascara and ended up with one from Chantecaille, which gave plenty of definition but looked natural. My foundation was Chanel
Vitalumière Aqua, which I still wear. It gives just enough coverage and is dewy without shine. And I went slightly lighter with my hair. Visiting John Frieda in Mayfair a
few times really paid off.’

Make-up artist and beauty entrepreneur
‘I always say you can’t have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas, so in the lead-up, I regularly had laser facials with Debbie Thomas at her Chelsea clinic for flawless, glowing skin. For my wedding, I wore my Pillow Talk lipstick, which smooths and shapes the lips, and lasts from the vows to the dancefloor. On your wedding day, I always think that you should have the most beautiful
lips. From the magical first kiss to sipping champagne and talking all day to your loved ones, a long-lasting, pout-perfecting, sumptuous lipstick is,
for me, a bride’s must-have.’

‘I had a small wedding of 50 people on the easternmost cape of the South Island in New Zealand. Brides often try to look like someone else, but I just wanted to look like me. For my make-up, I used Estée Lauder’s foundation, which I’ve relied on since my mother introduced me to it as a teenager. You appear to have naturally pretty skin, rather than make-up. To get a very subtle sun-kissed finish, I used By Terry Terrybly Densiliss Sun Glow, which was much-needed given that I had just
flown from a British winter into a New Zealand summer.’

‘In between seeing Joanne Evans, the facialist at Skin
Matters, I practised my personal daily routine ahead of the big day using Sisley products. My favourites included the Floral Toning Lotion and Gentle Facial Buffing Cream. I also blended the face cream with Black Rose Precious Face Oil. By night I used the Night Cream with Collagen and Woodmallow. I also swear by plenty of water and fresh air. It’s good for the soul and skin. I wore Prada’s Infusion d’Iris on my wedding day. It’s the scent worn by my grandmother and mother, and that I now love and wear too. My wedding dream team included the hair stylist Snowden Hill and the make-up artist Emma O’Byrne. I told them that I wanted to feel natural; I believe in looking timeless
on your wedding day.’
Miranda Almond
Senior fashion editor of Bazaar ‘Before my big day, I booked in for a treatment with the facial-massage specialist Nichola Joss. Friends had told me this would involve her digging
her fingers along my jawline and up under the apples of my cheeks to release tension I never knew
existed. I was, at the time, a facial-phobic with very sensitive skin, but I really loved her hands-on therapy. I only needed one treatment; after just an hour of massage with Decléor products, I left her Harley Street clinic with cheekbones that felt an inch higher, and a glow that was exactly right for the minimal make-up look I wanted on the day. She had given me an inner radiance that really helped me to look the very best version of myself.’
Aerin Lauder
Founder and creative director of Aerin ‘My wedding was held in the country with tonnes of fresh flowers. I can still remember
the scent of the garden roses during the ceremony; they were all around us. Rose is an eternal symbol of beauty and femininity, so I wore Aerin Rose de Grasse, a modern interpretation
that captures all its beauty in a bottle. It’s sophisticated, unexpected and iconic: exactly what
a modern-day bride should be. Fragrance is a personal expression. Pick a scent that has a special
meaning – something that evokes personal memories and emotions. Whether it’s the perfume
you wore when you first met your partner or the one that highlights your favourite flower – it should
be something you will never tire of or forget.’
