FACE OF CHANGE
The pioneering gallery promoting women in the art world
‘Notre Dame/Our Lady’ is the title of the inaugural multi-artist exhibition at Boogie Wall, London’s first female-run gallery that exclusively shows works by women. ‘Recent
research from the Freelands Foundation demonstrates that although they outnumber men in art school, women lose out professionally when it comes to securing commercial
representation or having a solo show,’ explains the gallery’s Swiss founder, Joe Kapelo. ‘Boogie Wall is aiming to change this.’ The French-Senegalese photographer Delphine Diallo’s emotionally charged portraits are a highlight of the display. ‘My curatorial
criteria? I like unconventionality,’ Kapelo says. This may also explain the gallery’s unusual name, which was inspired by a lyric from ‘Us Girls’, an Eighties electrofunk
record that calls for a woman’s right to ‘boogie too’. charlotte brook ‘Notre Dame/Our Lady’ is at Boogie Wall (www.boogie-wall.com) from 4 to 27 October.
