After studying medicine and completing military service in his native Italy, Mr Armani turned to fashion design, founding his eponymous label in 1975. He has since created some of history’s most iconic red-carpet looks for stars including Julia Roberts and Cate Blanchett. A book you return to ‘I like historical essays, especially those on ancient Rome in the time of the emperors. I am currently rereading

a novel about the life and death of one of the great leaders of the ancient world.’ What inspires you? ‘Films, books, history, research, travel, art, photography… although fundamentally, inspiration comes from observing people: how they live, how they move, how they work and how they change over time.’ Creativity is… ‘what I enjoy most in life. To be creative is a gift, and it should be appreciated and expressed to the best of one’s ability.’

A song that makes you happy ‘One that brings back beautiful memories is “Layla”, by my dear friend Eric Clapton.’
