EDITOR’S LETTER

- Lydia Slater

What a strange and significant year this has been – and of course it is not yet over; 2020 may still have more surprises up its sleeve, for good or ill. Over the last few months spent navigating its constantly shifting landscape, from the pandemic to the political upheaval, we have learnt that it may be best not to look too far ahead, but instead to cherish the present and seek comfort in the past. I have spent many a weekend curled up on the sofa, watching the films and rereading the books I loved as a teenager (Nora Ephron’s Heartburn is a reliable mood-booster, despite its title).

It is in the same spirit of consoling nostalgia that we have created this issue of Bazaar. While we may or may not be able to gather in company this festive season, within these pages we bring together a shimmering procession of exquisite eveningwear and a host of seasoned celebrants, from Joan Collins to Lauren Cuthbertson, with whom to revisit the greatest parties of times gone by. Meanwhile, as her iconic namesake bag is put on display at the V&A, Jane Birkin talks to us about style and Serge; Glenn Close looks back over her quietly brilliant career; and a quartet of notable authors pen witty winter’s tales for reading by the fire…
