The creative duo behind Preen reveal the big-top inspiration for their circus-themed pre-fall collection
With a pre-fall 2021 collection made up of vibrant, patchwork dresses, Preen’s Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton offered lockdown-weary consumers a sense of escapism. ‘We’ve always loved the idea that clothes can change your mood and transport you to a different place,’ say the designers. ‘This time we were thinking about running away with the circus.’ Their research led them to the work of Diane Arbus, who had photographed people on the fringes of society, including female sword-swallowers. ‘We admired her for championing diversity in her work as far back as the 1960s and for showing that there is magic in normal everyday things.’ lucy halfhead
