WALK IN HER SHOES
Interactive art that movingly illustrates the pligh of refugees
This month, a nine-year-old girl named Amal will embark on an epic journey. Starting at the border between Turkey and Syria, she will walk 5,000 miles before reaching her new home in the UK. Made from cane, carbon fibre and wooden stilts, Little Amal is a puppet created by the team behind War Horse and is the star of The Walk, an interactive art-and-theatre project designed to represent the journey of an unaccompanied refugee child. ‘We think of refugees as problems,’ says the artistic director, the playwright Amir Nizar Zuabi, ‘but The Walk is thinking about them as sources of creativity and culture.’ brooke theis www.walkwithamal.org
