Mary McCartney captures the magic of Cartier
‘I’m quite nostalgic when it comes to Cartier,’ says Mary McCartney. ‘I inherited some of their earrings from my mother that are among the most sentimental things I own. Dad also gave me a Love bracelet for my 21st.’ Indeed, the themes of heritage and shared history underpin a new exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery devoted to the maison’s past, present and future, with which McCartney herself is much involved: she is not only contributing her portraits of Cartier’s new generation of ambassadors, including Vanessa Kirby and the boxer Ramla Ali, but also overseeing a custom-built studio. Here, some of the UK’s rising photographic talents will take pictures of members of the public, to be displayed digitally at the end of the exhibition.
Before that, visitors can enjoy a glittering walk through seven of the French luxury house’s most iconic designs and past sensational archive shots of legends such as Tina Turner wearing their own Cartier pieces.
‘This will be a very immersive experience,’ McCartney says. ‘It’s exciting. I may well wear Mum’s earrings to the launch party.’ kim parker
‘Studio 7 by Cartier’ is at the Saatchi Gallery (www. saatchigallery.com) from 21 July to 8 August.
