A monumental Sixties music festival is rediscovered in a new documentary
Dubbed the Black Woodstock, the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival had been lost to time. Video tapes of its joyous performances – from luminaries including Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone – sat forgotten in a basement for 50 years until the musician and DJ Questlove dusted off the footage and spun it into an invigorating concert documentary. With jazz, gospel and Afro-Cuban beats, Summer of Soul commemorates the resounding power of music in New York’s Black community. yo ‘Summer of Soul’ will be released in cinemas on 16 July.
