PHOEBE SAATCHI YATES

The gallerist shares her favourite spots for art-lovers in Turin

-

Three words that describe Turin ‘Charming, dynamic and elegante.’

Best place to stay

‘Duparc Contemporary Suites (www.duparcsuites.com). The owner is a renowned collector and his wife is an artist. The hotel was founded in the 1970s by his father, Corrado Levi. You can find works by Italian greats: Giuseppe Penone, Carla Accardi, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mimmo Rotella and Mario Schifano, along with contemporary artists.’

Favourite restaurant

‘Scannabue (www.scannabue.it): a perfect spot for spending a whole afternoon, with delicious northern Italian food. I brought a friend who asked for a vegan menu, which, if you translate the restaurant name (‘to slaughter an ox’), was not received well.’

An unforgettable view

‘The roof terrace at Museo Nazionale della Montagna (www.museomontagna.org) on Monte dei Cappuccini. There is a light installation by Rebecca Horn, and you have beautiful vistas over the city and on to the Alps.’

Best tip for relaxation

‘Head to Da Michele’s terrace in the summer (www.damichele1922.it). You look out to the Gran Madre and can while away the day reading with an endless supply of wine and slices of pizza.’

Your ideal travelling companion

‘Someone who knows all the best spots – or has the patience to find them.’

Where to go for an adventure

‘The orange-throwing festival in Ivrea is fun. For a less energetic day trip, tucked away in Barolo is a rainbow chapel painted by the minimalist icon Sol LeWitt, flanked by vineyards. Heaven!’

A top insider secret

‘Our gallery, Saatchi Yates (www.saatchiyates.com), will be having its first exhibition outside of London in Turin this November, during Artissima and the ATP tennis tournament.’

What do you pack?

‘Dresses from Simone Rocha, come rain or shine; a Cristina Linassi night gown; Vibi Venezia slippers, a sun hat from Shrimps; a small ruched bag from Molly Goddard; and a pink Henriette von Grünberg bow.’

Beauty essentials

‘Kate Somerville factor 50 spray, aftersun and a Mason Pearson hair brush – and the number of an Italian hairdresser.’

Best holiday read
