Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair, continues her column

BY the time the train left Clapham Junction, last Sunday’s 8.02am from Victoria to Brighton was heaving.

Not surprising considering it was the Brighton Marathon. There’s something about a marathon which makes you realise what a lot of inspirational people there are in the world with runners going to phenomenal lengths to support all sorts of worthwhile causes (both animal and human) dear to their hearts.

I was supporting a group providing music en-route and, by chance, we were stationed outside Brighton’s Dogs Trust shop. Like most rehoming charities, Dogs Trust are experts in rehoming dogs who are all too familiar with running – greyhounds.

Although all greyhounds are entirely different and have unique personalities, they do, on the whole, have a reputation, after they have retired from racing, for being couch potatoes who love a cuddle and snoozing on the sofa.

The gorgeous Lexi is an ex-racing greyhound who is currently in the care of All Dogs Matter (ADM) while she waits for a home. She’s gentle, affectionate and enjoys being around people. She’s wellsuited for a first-time dog owner.

When out and about, Lexi is good with other dogs but she also enjoys time to herself. If you’re interested in homing the lovely Lexi see more details at alldogsmatter.co.uk or email info@alldogsmatter. co.uk or call 020 8341 3196.

If, like the marathon runners, physical exercise is your passion, ADM are inviting us to fundraise for them by taking part in the Ford RideLondon-Essex 60 cycle ride on Sunday May 26 or the Royal Parks Half Marathon on Sunday October 13. As a fundraiser for ADM, you’ll receive a bespoke vest, fundraising support and a commemorative medal. For details contact ADM (see above).

Also in order to raise funds, ADM are opening a pop-up charity shop in Hampstead High Street from April 29- May12.

In keeping with Hampstead’s reputation, we can expect the shop to be filled with quality items and designer clothing including from ADM’s celebrity patrons such as Alan Carr, Ricky Gervais and Michelle Collins as well as new ADM merchandise.

ADM are asking if we have any high-end or designer items we could donate or if we’re interested in volunteering at the shop to email info@alldogsmatter.co.uk.

Finally, if you prefer to raise funds for charity by doing something more sedentary, then Pumpkin’s Wildlife Hospital are appealing for people to knit or crochet wildlife-themed items such as foxes, rabbits and hedgehogs for them to sell at future events. If you’d like patterns for these, email sla@beetlecross.co.uk.
