Pick up your walking pace for greater benefits, the best new ultra-running books.
Aiming for 10,000 steps a day? Great, but make it quick – health experts now say pace is as important as distance when it comes to health. Public Health England (PHE) and the Royal College of General Practitioners recommend upping the intensity of your walking rather than just focusing on number of steps. Research shows 10 minutes of brisk walking a day (that gets your heart rate up) can reduce risk of early death by up to 15 per cent. Download PHE’s free Active 10 app to track the intensity and time of your walks as well as the distance, and stride out!
