Why Kate Winslet is actually glad she didn’t hook up with Leo Dicaprio

- Lucy Vine

Nineteen years ago, she told him, “I’ll never let go,” and, TBH, she really hasn’t. Last Sunday, an emotional Kate Winslet was front and centre to watch as her good friend Leonardo Dicaprio finally collected an Oscar for Best Actor in The Revenant– and the pair couldn’t have been more adorable. So, what’s the secret to such a long-lasting friendship? No sex, it seems.

“Kate and Leo had a brother-and-sister chemistry from the start,” says an insider close to the actors who played starcrossed lovers Jack and Rose in 1997 blockbuster Titanic. “They were so young when the movie came out – Kate was 21, Leo was 22 – and this was their big break. The shoot was really gruelling, which bonded them, and then when the film came out, it catapulted them into mega-stardom simultaneously.”

Back then, Leo, now 41, revealed his affection for Kate, 40, saying in a 1997 interview, “We just like each other as people. As far as doing a love scene, though –we laughed about it a lot.” And that’s because sex has never been on the table, say insiders. “Everyone says they should have been a couple, but it’s not like that,” adds the friend. “They both know if they’d ever slept together, they couldn’t have the relationship they now do. Their friendship survived this long because they’ve avoided that.” Kate even admitted it herself in 2012, saying, “I think the reason that friendship works is because there was never any romantic thing.” There may not be romance, but there sure is love. Leo says, “Kate and I have really grown up in this industry together, we’ve been there for each other.” While Kate said in 2009, “Leo, I’m so happy I can tell you how much I love you and how much I’ve loved you for 13 years.” Modeliser Leo even walked Kate down the aisle in 2012 when she married husband Ned Rocknroll.

And heat’s insider adds, “They’ve always been there for each other. They may not always be in the same country, but they speak on the phone constantly.

“Kate doesn’t judge him, and Leo is great with Kate’s kids, Mia, Joe and Bear – they call him Uncle Leo. It’s the perfect relationship.”
