A quickie with... Jodie Whittaker
What did you think of Beth’s new career turn in this series?
I thought it was really interesting and real how Beth is very nervous of this new career [as an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor], and is very tentative about not making any mistakes. When I researched the role, I realised how important it is that the job is completely independent. The advisors are not there to tick a box or help with statistics. Their only concern is to help the people they’re working with in any way they can.
Many of your scenes are with Julie Hesmondhalgh – what’s she like?
I had a sense before meeting her that she was a lovely human being, and then when I worked with her, it was fantastic. I’ve never met anyone who spends so much time and energy not just on her performance, but also in being a f**king great person. She’s just one of life’s good people.
What was it like filming your final scene?
My last scene was with [on-screen husband] Andy Buchan and it was so moving. As a married couple for three seasons, we’ve been through a lot, so it was really sad to be ending it. But we also felt so proud to have been part of this show. I cried when we wrapped. It doesn’t take a lot for me to cry, obviously, but I did feel really proud of all of us.
Now [Broadchurch creator] Chris Chibnall is taking over Doctor Who, would you like to be in it?
Shall I email him? “Dude, give me a role in Doctor Who!” It’s exciting because that show is a part of everyone’s childhood. I feel really excited for Chris – I know how passionate he is about it.
You starred in Britflick Adult Life Skills – would you like to do more films?
That was made by one of my best mates, Rachel Tunnard, and we do want to work on something else together. She won a BIFA and I’ve never cried so much – there was snot running down my face.
