Through the Beckham keyhole

Brooklyn gives us a sneak peek into their home life

- What I See by Brooklyn Beckham is out in hardback on 29 June (Penguin Random House, £16.99)*

Ever wondered what goes on behind the solid gold doors chez Beckham? Well, wonder no more, as Brooklyn has given us a great insight into what it’s like to live with his famous family in his new photography book, What I See.

And although it doesn’t contain any pictures of David in his underwear or Posh putting the bins out, we learnt a thing or two. Like, while most of us struggle to fit a table in our kitchens, the Beckhams’ is so big, Brooklyn can practise his skateboarding skills in it. It also has two huge fridges, a snazzy coffee maker and what appears to be four ovens. One for each child, perhaps?

Despite being 18 and about to leave for photography college in New York, Brooklyn is very close to his younger brothers, Romeo, 14, and Cruz, 12, and five-year-old sister Harper, and it seems as if his artistic skills are already rubbing off on her. One of the 300 snaps in the book shows Harper engrossed in a colouring book (we hope she stayed in the lines – that table looks expensive). Brooklyn writes, “My sister loves drawing. I taught her and we do it together sometimes. This is her at the kitchen table.”

And while most five year olds would be happy with a bag of Haribo after performing at their local ballet show, Harper is already showing signs of having loftier expectations. Talking about a photo of Romeo holding some flowers, Brooklyn says, “I didn’t plan this photo – Romeo and I were waiting to see our little sister’s ballet recital and we bought her flowers. I took this when we were waiting outside.”

But his parents weren’t that impressed with one shot, which sees him on the ledge of a tall building: “My parents were so angry when they saw this. So stupid. (Cool shot though).”

And poor Brooklyn admits it wasn’t easy to make the book, too, due to his pesky brandaware parents. “It was hard to get [the pics] approved,” he said. “Took bloody ages. Most times, I’m secretive about taking them . If my mum sees me taking a picture, she kind of poses and stuff, and I don’t really like that.”

Posh posing? Surely not.
