Len Goodman’s Partners In Rhyme

BBC1, Saturdays, 6.45pm

-

Len Goodman may be many things – legendary former head judge of Strictly, ex-dancer, engaging radio presenter – but I’m not sure he’s a game-show host. Nevertheless, the BBC has decided to give him a go at this role, and is so excited about the idea, they’ve even included his name in the title of this new primetime Saturday night series. Even Noel Edmonds doesn’t get this honour (although maybe calling his new weekday show Noel Edmonds’ Cheap Cheap Cheap might have been a tad confusing). I mention Noel quite deliberately – Edmonds is clearly a total pro when it comes to this game-show hosting lark, as seemingly effortless and comfortable as poor Len Goodman is stiff and try-hard. Yes, I know Len is a national treasure and I, like everyone else, loved watching him shout “Seven!” throughout the last 12 years of Strictly. But moving from behind that judging desk to front an old-school, shiny-floor game show seems to have removed everything that’s charming and loveable about the great man. His every move looks awkward, while his jokey schtick is accompanied by a permanent rictus grin. The Strictly Len was totally honest and authentic. The game-show Len feels a bit flat. Which is a shame, because the format of Partners In Rhyme – based on a game by smart ex-xtra Factor dude Matt Edmondson – is a winner. Like Catchphrase gone bonkers, contestants have to work out surreal rhyming phrases from visual clues, followed by a gaggle of amusing rhyme-based frolics. In the hands of a seasoned host, it would work, but as it is, it should be renamed Len Goodman’s Not A Presenter.
