Star OF THE YEAR ANSEL ELGORT
On his breakout role in Babybaby Driverdriver
Was it fun being part of a film like Baby Driver, where music plays a major role?
Music has always been a big part of my life and always will be. That was one of the big attractions of making this movie and getting to play a character who can’t live without music. It was also an incredible honour and privilege being part of a dream cast [Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx]. You learn so much, not only from their performances, but also from the way they handle themselves and how professional they are.
You’ve released a new track, Thief, and its corresponding music video. Was that exciting?
I’m lucky that I’m able to do both films and music. I’ve had great opportunities with some big movies and I don’t take it for granted at all. I love the work, and I want to keep pushing myself as hard as I can.
You were named after famous photographer Ansel Adams. Do people tease you about it?
[Laughs.] Sometimes. It’s more that people ask me to repeat my name. Then they come back with, “Hansel, like Hansel and Gretel?” And I always say, “No, Ansel! Like the photographer.” But it’s OK now. In a way, it sets you apart, which can be a good thing in this business.
A lot of your fans were very impressed with your physique in the Thief video. Do you work out a lot?
Not as much as I used to. A few years ago, I would spend a lot of time training at the Brooklyn Boulders gym [in New York] and boxing at the Trinity Boxing Club in Greenwich. Boxing is the best training you can ever do – it’s very tough. I also did rock climbing with some friends, although I haven’t been able to do that in a while.
You’ve had an incredible year – are you excited where your career is heading?
I feel very lucky and grateful about everything. Things couldn’t be better.
An unusual name sets you apart in this business
