Cheryl is having herself a bit of a therapy sesh with her new music #blessed

After a life-changing year, the singer has a new focus

-

This past year, we’ve seen lots of new Cheryls. There was Liam Payne’s girlfriend Cheryl, pregnant Cheryl, and then mum Cheryl. It’s been fun, but oh how we’ve missed singer Cheryl. Luckily for us, 2018 is all about our original girl crush returning to form, as she hits the studio with a vengeance and announces plans for a new album. But friends say this isn’t just about getting her career back on track – it’s about working through a lifechanging time with the help of music.

“Cheryl says this album is going to be her most personal yet and the process has been just like therapy,” says an insider close to the 34-year-old Geordie, who gave birth to son Bear last March. “She’s found writing really therapeutic and has been really inspired by the last year. It’s been wonderful, but it’s also been the hardest of her life. Becoming a mum, taking a step back from her work, and the pressure to get back into shape – it’s naturally been a struggle. And it’s been an adjustment with Liam, too, especially since he’s been away in America so much promoting his own music. But Cheryl’s putting it all into her new album.”

After recently confirming she was working on new music and that she had “plans” for an album, Cheryl was spotted back in the studio just before Christmas. She’s working with her former Girls Aloud bandmate Nicola Roberts, as well as producers Team Salut, who called their work together the “highlight of our year”. Cheryl replied, “Thank you for a great session you guys are amazing.” It comes after Nicola, 32, revealed, “I’m writing for Cheryl and also for myself. Hopefully those songs are good enough to make it out into the world.”

It will be Cheryl’s first new album since Only Human in 2014, and now she’s back at work, she’s raring to go, despite Liam, 24, having some reservations. We’re told, “He’s a bit worried about exactly what Cheryl’s going to be singing about. It will obviously be quite revelatory about their relationship, and that makes him nervous, but Cheryl is adamant she wants to pour her heart out. She wants to get really personal with her fans and has even written a song that is dedicated to Bear. It’s been so therapeutic, but it’s also about coming back with a bang. She’s been away from music for so long, she knows this has to be big.” ■
