Strictly finalist Gemma, 33, showcased her amazing athletic frame on this year’s show. We asked her how she feels about her body...

What are the main changes you’ve made to your diet and fitness over the last year?

It wasn’t so much what I ate, it was more about being consistent with my food choices. Previously, I’d have slacked on my diet because it was a weekend, whereas now I eat food my body needs 95 per cent of the time, and once a week I might have a pizza or go to the chippy.

How has it changed the way you feel about your body?

The phrase “you are what you eat” couldn’t be more true. If I eat crap foods I feel crappy, if I eat nutritious food I feel great.

How has Strictly challenged you physically?

I was strong from doing Thai Boxing for six years, and I was used to having knocks, aches and bruises. It was more mentally challenging for me, as training all day as well as working on my radio show meant I got less sleep. If I don’t have at least six hours, I’m grumpy and sometimes I even feel sick because of it. I was getting five hours max, so mentally it took its toll.

How do you keep motivated when you’re feeling sluggish?

I remind myself of how I feel at my best. How much clearer my skin is, how much more energy I have. I do believe in listening to my body, so if I feel tired, I rest. Slowing down is fine, just don’t stop for good.

If you could recommend one thing our readers could do to improve their health and fitness in 2018, what would it be?

Never compare yourself to anyone else. We’re all different, our bodies respond differently and we have different interests when it comes to exercise. Find what you love and what works for you and compare each session or progress picture to where you started – no one else. Listen to Gemma, Matt and Mike weekdays from 6-10am on Key 103.
