A quickie with... Tom Rosenthal and Ryan Sampson
How was filming the new series?
Tom: It was the same as always – we went to Bulgaria for two months and hung out in a really weird little world. We made friends with all of the Bulgarian waiters. This year was more relaxed, as they gave us weekends off, so we went on a few holidays.
Ryan: It was red hot the whole time, so we needed a few Pleb holiday beach weekends.
And what happens on a Plebs holiday?
T: We were going out in, like, a weird holiday park. I’ve never been to Blackpool, but it’s what I imagine that would be like.
R: There was a games arcade and a big strip where we had a water fight. Oh, and we saw a wedding. Bulgarians seem to get married everywhere – even if you’re just walking through a shopping centre, you’ll spot a wedding. And we went go-karting.
The show is in talks for a US version…
T: It’s incredible, but we won’t be in it.
But it means they’ve watched you?
R: It is nice for the ego to have that in the back pocket. That Seth Rogen has watched us and liked it, and wants to do something with it. T: When they were pitching it to American networks, they said they really like the dynamic of the show, but that they can’t have a slave. Like, “We love the slave character… but can we not have a slave?” It’s exciting to see what is going to happen with it.
If it is a big hit in America, it probably won’t do us any harm.
R: And if they film it in the same area in Bulgaria, we can give them tips of nice places to go go-karting.
What does new character Jason bring to the show?
T: He brings broad shoulders to the show. And a chiselled body. R: It just makes us look more weedy next to him. We are two impressive specimens of men, but next to him…
Ollie Locke makes a cameo in this series – how was that?
T: They looked hard to find this cameo, trying to find a bit of a hipster character, and as soon as they said they found Ollie, we all agreed it was perfect.
