Oh dear, Victoria and David Beckham just can’t seem to shake those split rumours
Despite the united front, those split rumours just won’t seem to go away…
Everyone knows that Instagram is the place you go to pretend everything is perfect and glossy. But not even the best filter could disguise the arms-crossed awkwardness between Victoria and David Beckham on holiday on the French Riviera last week. Fans piled in to accuse the couple of faking it, and insiders tell heat that – despite the united front for social media – friends worry that things are worse than ever between the pair.
“It’s never been quite this bad before,” says an insider close to the couple who have endured affair allegations and divorce rumours during their 19-year marriage. “This year has really tested their relationship, and it’s been very tough. Vic has spent most of the summer trying to make things better after all the recent split claims [which were strongly denied by the couple] – it’s why she suggested yet another holiday – everyone is worried there may be other issues between them. They don’t seem to be communicating as much recently.”
The couple were on holiday with their children, Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, Cruz, 13, and Harper, seven, as well as old friends, Elton John and David Furnish, and their two boys, Zachary, and Elijah. The Beckhams were spotted having lunch at La Guérite restaurant half a mile off the coast of Cannes, before meeting the singer at his yacht for a sailing trip. Victoria, 44, later posted a tense-looking group shot with David and Elton. David, 43, then posted his own picture with Elton to Instagram – but without his wife. The pair also posted videos from their trip, but none seemed to show much affection between them. Fans were quick to comment in their droves, with many speculating about the apparent tension. One noted that, “DB had his arms crossed while VB has her leg draped over him. It’s cringeworthy as David never touches her and they are fooling no one.” A second added, “He is not that

into her any more by the looks of it.” A third wrote, “My God, he looks so dismissive around her. I’m actually starting to feel sorry for her.” Another felt sorry for the fashion designer, commenting, “Poor Posh. Why can’t David just fake it for the photos like the rest of us!”
It was a similar story when they posed on the red carpet together in Monaco at the Champions League draw, where the former England captain was being awarded the 2018 UEFA President’s Award. Many noted how distant they seemed and was in stark contrast to their previous red-carpet appearances, where they were draped all over each other. However, Victoria was quick to gush about her husband on her Instagram page.
And insiders have told us that social media is a source of tension right now. “David gets frustrated with the allegations that Vic is putting on this show online,” we’re told. “He’s told her that he will do anything necessary to protect his kids and keep them happy, but he thinks it looks bad if they are seen to be participating in PDAS for their Instagram followers. He sometimes feels like people will think she’s just trying to show off. It’s actually made the situation worse between them and you can see how bad things seem to be from the videos and photos. It was just like at the Royal Wedding back in May, when Victoria seemed like she was trying to make him hold her hand, and they ended up sitting at opposite ends of the table. The body language sometimes makes it look like David wants to try to avoid her as much as possible and live a very separate life.”
As heat has reported, the pair have had a tense summer, with headlines screaming about an impending break-up as David prepares to move to Miami, where he is currently launching a Major League Soccer team. And just a few weeks ago, we told you how the former Spice Girl had offered to take a step back from her work at her fashion brand, in order to spend more time with her family – even suggesting she move to the US to spend some quality time with David. We’re told, “The kids were so thrown by the recent divorce rumours, even though they know they were untrue. David wants to reassure them and show them everything is OK. He agreed how important it was to spend the summer as a family in order to get things back to how they used to be, which is why they’ve been on so many holidays.”
Friends say Posh is also determined to work things out. “Victoria is so terrified of failure and the world laughing at her,” we’re told. “She just can’t help herself. She’s also hoping that if they put on a united front in public maybe that will spill over into their private life, too. Maybe David will start showing her more affection when they’re out, and they can work together to get things back on track. She says they’ve had problems in the past and these tactics worked before. It took around a year, but things did get better. The trouble is, the scrutiny this year has been really intense. Even at their worst point, they’ve always still worked together to maintain the Beckham brand. All Vic can do now is keep trying and hoping, but they’re both determined to make it work.” n
