They’ll be celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary next year, but judging by David Beckham’s recent comments about his relationship with wife Victoria, things don’t sound too loved-up in the Beckham household. During a tell-all TV interview in Australia, David was asked questions about his marriage and he replied, “When you’ve been married for the amount of time that we have, it’s always hard work.” He then added, “It becomes a little more complicated.”

As heat went to press, no one had seen the full interview, but fans were quick to respond about his choice of words. “Is David trying to tell us something? It doesn’t sound as if he’s that happy,” while another said, “I’m sure Posh was thrilled to hear he thinks she’s hard work.”

His admission comes just weeks after Victoria’s Vogue interview, where David was missing from the front cover family shot, and she made their marriage sound very business-like. “We both realise that we are stronger together,” she revealed. “Would either of us be in the position that we are in now had we not met and been together all those years ago? We are much stronger – the six of us – than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key.”

David’s interview took place

‘Vic hates seeing everyone questioning them again’

soon after the couple missed Princess Eugenie’s star-studded royal wedding, despite being invited. And we’re told they politely declined, because Posh couldn’t bear to put her marriage up for public scrutiny once again.

“It’s becoming increasingly difficult for Victoria to deal with the embarrassment of people constantly analysing and speculating about their relationship,” a source close to the fashion designer tells heat. “She hates seeing how everyone’s questioned them again, not to mention having to explain that to their children. It’s tough enough as it is, so she’s just trying to scale back the talk surrounding their marriage as much as possible. She knew that if they went to Eugenie’s wedding, it would just be another chance for people to pick over their every move.”

Back in the day, the couple were known for their extravagant PDAS on the red carpet and gushing about each other in interviews, which makes this new frosty dynamic all the more stark. Last May, they hit the headlines after David, 43, appeared to refuse to hold Victoria’s hand at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Since then, his public displays of no affection have only become more obvious. Now, we’re told, Posh is fed up with looking rejected in front of the world – and instead chose to spend Eugenie’s wedding weekend at a spa in Baden-baden, Germany.

But, despite the strain, Victoria, 44, isn’t prepared to completely shy away – as “she knows that she can’t skip every event, so has decided to save their appearances for the ones that can’t be avoided.” This week, she’s joined David in Sydney, Australia, to support him in his role as an ambassador for Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, alongside their four children, Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, Cruz, 13, and seven-year-old Harper.

Whether the sports legend previously known as Golden Balls plays ball this time remains to be seen.
