With both parents having jobs in the Navy, a passion for travel was bound to be in my blood. My dad would regale my brothers and I with stories of ports all over the world – the food he’d eaten and the eccentric characters he’d met. When he worked out in Saudi Arabia, he brought me back a gold necklace with a shell pendant when I was nine – I didn’t wear it for years because I thought it was the most precious thing on earth. My mum would encourage us to try new things when we went on holiday, too – whether it was being sent to order croissants in French, or my first taste of mussels while in Menorca. They inspired all of their children to branch out and seek adventure where they could find it. My eldest brother now lives in San Francisco, the other in Canada, and I take every chance I get to travel. As I write this, my suitcase is packed for a weekend trip to Berlin.
