Pig out and stay in shape with our festiveproof fitness tips
FESTIVE-PROOF Stay on track (ish) despite the gluttony
We’re already knee deep in December. Juggling boozy parties, mince pies and watching Elf on repeat means you’re more likely to get in a sweat from layering up the Christmas jumpers than in the gym. But don’t let the festivities railroad your fitness goals. Ben Davie, Matrix Lead Trainer at Digme (digmefitness.com) has some tips – and they’re not all burpees and Brussels sprouts. “My diet isn’t as great as usual at this time of year,” admits Ben. “So I use some of these little tricks to stay active over the festive period and avoid doing too much harm.”
1 MAKE A SWEAT DATE
“Generally we have more time over the Christmas period, so book in a date with a friend – a sweat date,” Ben suggests. “Go to a class together to energise yourselves before you party.”
2 EMBRACE THE FESTIVE FOOD
“Load your breakfast plate with cranberries, dates and figs, snack on pretzels and unsalted nuts, and find inventive ways to put a healthy twist on your traditional turkey – it’s a great source of protein,” says Ben.
3 BE PLANFUL
When planning your December calendar, slot in some workouts as well as parties. “Be realistic with yourself,” advises Ben. “There’s little point putting a workout in the diary for 7.30am if your office party is the night before.”
4 STAY HO-HOHYDRATED
Going hard on the eggnog this Chrimbo? Ben recommends drinking a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage. “Make sure you drink plenty of water before bed and when you wake up to help your body maintain hydration. You’ll feel better for this, and it may even give you the energy to go for that workout you planned.”
5 THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY
Above all, don’t forget that it’s OK to relax a bit. “Rest is good for the body. Christmas is there to be enjoyed,” says Ben. “Be kind to yourself and your body. Don’t feel guilty about swapping your super-intense sessions for a gentle walk with loved ones.”
