‘Getting a royal stamp of approval is a golden opportunity’

If you have to be a godparent – with all the responsibility and remembering-of-birthdays that comes with it – you might as well make it a royal baby. Victoria Beckham has apparently told friends she is desperate for a certain Duke and Duchess of Sussex to give her the honorary title when their little one arrives. But she’s worried her maverick husband might kill their chances.

“Victoria feels as though she has a proper shot at becoming the godparent,” says an insider close to the Beckham family, who are long-term friends to Prince Harry and his wife Meghan

Markle, and attended their wedding last year. “Vic has been spending quite a bit of time with Meghan lately and heard rumours that she may be asked. She absolutely loves having a connection to royalty and this would be the ultimate honour. She’s been doing everything she can for Meghan by sending her lots of free clothes, and inundating her with interior design advice for [new home] Frogmore Cottage. She doesn’t want to crowd Meghan, but at the same time she wants her to know that she’s there for her 24/7 and would be for the baby, too.”

According to friends of the 45-yearold fashion designer, the only hurdle could be her husband of nearly 20 years, David. “Victoria is terrified of him making some public mistake in the run-up to the birth,” says a source close to the pair, who are parents to Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. “David seems to be attracting a lot of negative headlines lately, like when he described marriage as being ‘hard work’ or when he’s been photographed partying with a group of girls.” Just last week, the former England captain hit the news yet again as it was revealed that his Miami football team was being sued over their stadium plan, which involves demolishing a historic building. The insider continues, “Vic is really worried that her and David’s chance of being godparents could be jeopardised if he slips up. She’s told him he needs to step up and act more of a dutiful husband in the public eye to prove they’re the perfect choice for Meghan and Harry. She’s really piling on the pressure – she is exhausting herself, but she feels it will be worth it if they can pull this off. Vic really feels as though Brand Beckham has suffered lately, and while there’s no doubt she’s acting out of friendship to Meghan and Harry, getting a royal stamp of approval like this would be such a golden opportunity.” n
