THE PLOT When actressturned-filmmaker Allison (Plaza) comes to a lakeside retreat to write her latest script, she’s the catalyst that shakes up the relationship of her married hosts Gabe (Abbott) and Blair (Gadon). But that’s just the appetiser for the main course, in which all three main characters have shifted identities, and are now involved in making an indie movie.
WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT? This smart, playful film keeps you guessing while layering on dark comedy, as Allison is manipulated into a meltdown.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT? If the term “meta” sends you running for the hills, better swerve this one.
VERDICT Plaza – also a producer of Black Bear – enjoys one of her richest roles to date. ★★★★
