Inside a not-so-normal night at the Baftas
It had it all: multiple red carpets, multiple Zoom wins, and multiple Liam Paynes
It was never going to be a normal night at the Bafta Film Awards. But last week’s ceremony still proved to be a glitzy affair, gathering the world’s biggest stars both in person and remotely – and on either side of the pond – for a right old love-in.
In London, Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dyvenor posed for the paps, while Priyanka Chopra, singer Celeste (who was performing), and Hugh Grant and his wife Anna Elisabet Eberstein also donned their gladrags and headed for the Royal Albert Hall. Meanwhile, over in LA, Anna Kendrick, Renée Zellweger and Australian actress Rose Byrne walked their own red carpet – and saved a ton on travel expenses.
But, naturally, the night belonged to the winners. Big congrats went to Daniel Kaluuya, who was named Best Supporting Actor for his role as Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah, and Emerald Fennell, won Best Original Screenplay and Best British Film for her feature debut, Promising Young Woman. Perhaps the biggest feel-good moment of the evening was when newcomer Bukky Bakray, 18, won the EE Rising Star award following her first-ever acting role in the low-budget film Rocks.
And then things got very trippy as Liam Payne gave an augmented-reality assisted performance of his new single Midnight, which saw him appear onstage next to a hologram of himself in a mind-bending duet.
Like we said, it was never going to be a normal night. n
