Inventing Anna
Netflix, Friday 11 February
In a week of excellent TV, make time for Netflix’s binge-worthy true crime-inspired ten-parter. Written by Shonda Rhimes (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy), and based on the New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler, it’s the story of Anna Delvey – real name Anna Sorokin – a young woman who masqueraded as a wealthy German heiress, schmoozed New York society, and managed to defraud banks, hotels and wealthy acquaintances of thousands of dollars. In 2019, a jury found her guilty of theft of services and grand larceny and she was sentenced to four-to-12 years in state prison. With a great cast including Julia Garner (Ozark) as the unknowable and peculiar Anna, and Veep’s Anna Chlumsky as the tenacious journalist who told her story, you can’t help getting hooked by Anna’s lies.
