Louis Theroux’s Hidden America: Rap’s New Frontline

In case you missed it, last week saw the return of the great Louis Theroux and his brand-new series Forbidden America, exploring the impact of the internet and social media on some of the most controversial areas of American society. Last week addressed the young streamers who promote far-right views, and this week, Louis explores Florida’s multimillion-dollar rap scene, which is as famous for the controversy surrounded its stars as it is the music. Louis spends time with a number of artists who self-promote on social media, ranging from fuelling fierce rivalries online to live-streaming their often violent lifestyles. While many of their followers appreciate the no-holds-barred accounts of their struggles and hardships, the authorities mainly see it as evidence of criminals indulging in “illegal gang activity”. ★★★★
