A mere two weeks after Vikings: Valhalla made its debut on Netflix, the platform adds yet more Vikings to its roster with this, the fifth season of the British show based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories novels. Crucially, Alexander Dreymon returns as Uhtred, despite the Walking Dead-style time-jump that has taken place since season four. When we rejoin the action, King Edward is still pushing ahead with his ambitions to unite the Saxon Kingdoms, in an attempt to make his late father’s dream come true. Of course, he’ll never succeed, or The Last Kingdom would become very dull indeed. And so, as this first episode of ten begins, the long-standing peace between Danes and Saxons is under threat from a new Saxon rebellion. ★★★★
