Deep Water

Cert 15, 116 minutes, on Prime Video 18 March

- Charles Gant

Starring: Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas, Tracy Letts Director: Adrian Lyne

THE PLOT Tech millionaire Vic (Affleck) seems to tolerate the blatant infidelities of his free-spirited wife Melinda (de Armas). But when one of her lovers is found drowned after a pool party, crime writer Lionel (Letts) reckons he’s stumbled across the story of his next bestseller. WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT? Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s 1957 novel of the same name, this suspenseful tale – not so much a whodunnit, more of a did-he-do-it? – keeps us guessing. WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT? Although Highsmith is a revered crime novelist (she wrote The Talented Mr Ripley), psychological motivation isn’t always her strong suit, and it’s not so easy to relate to these characters. VERDICT The first film in 20 years from one-time king of the erotic thriller Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal) is a solidly entertaining effort… but not a classic. ★★★
