Then Barbara Met Alan
BBC2, Monday 21 March, 9pm
This inspirational one-off drama tells the story of the key role played by two cabaret performers, Barbara (Ruth Madeley, Years And Years) and Alan (Arthur Hughes, The Innocents), in the campaign of direct action that led to the passing of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act. Written by the great Jack Thorne (Help), alongside actor-turnedwriter Genevieve Barr (The Silence), the story begins in the early ’90s when many deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people in Britain faced huge discrimination in their daily lives. Along came Barbara and Alan, whose anarchic activism helped rally an army of disabled protestors across Britain. As entertaining as it is educational. ★★★★
