Stitch Up: Create a hem

-

EQUIPMENT:

● A sharp needle ● Thread in the same ● colour as your garment

Embroidery scissors

Method:

1 Press your hem and pin in place. Thread your needle with a single length of thread, knotted at the end.

2 Looking at the wrong side of your fabric (the inside of your skirt or trouser leg) start off at one end with a few stitches within the folded edge to anchor your stitching in place.

3 Use your needle to carefully pick up just one or two threads a few millimetres to the left, so you’re not going through the front side of the fabric. Then take your stitching back through the folded edge, a few millimetres along from this. You want to stitching a zigzag pattern from right to left, but instead of sewing all the way through the fabric, you’re just picking up a couple of threads each time.

4 Once you’ve stitched all the way around, finish off with three or four stitches all in the same place in your folded hem edge, pulling taut to secure. This will secure your stitching in place and be less fiddly than trying to tie a knot.
