PARALLEL MOTHERS ★★★★

In this beautifully made latest from Pedro Almodóvar, two first-time mothers – forty-something Janis (Penélope Cruz) and teenage Ana (Milena Smit) – form a bond when they give birth to their babies in the same ward. Later, Ana comes to live with Janis as a nanny and things get fascinatingly complicated. We could have done without the Spanish Civil War sub-plot, but this is still great.
