It’s been an astonishing 17 years since Silent Witness’ lead character Dr Sam Ryan, played by Amanda Burton, left the show to return home to Northern Ireland. All this time later, we finally get to meet the character again, as Sam reaches out to Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and the rest of the Lyell team with a plea for help. Burton’s return is designed to celebrate the show’s 25 years on TV, during which we’ve seen over 200 episodes of pathologists investigating murders and getting murdered themselves in a shock fashion. Tonight’s opening episode begins with an assassination attempt on Sam’s husband in Liverpool. On a mission to bring about democratic healthcare, Sam asks for Nikki and co’s help, which leads them into a world full of lies and betrayal.
