Troy Deeney: Black History Matters Too

CHANNEL 4, MONDAY 23 MAY, 10PM

- JASON ARNOPP

Birmingham City striker and anti-racism campaigner Troy Deeney was at the forefront of the movement to get sportspeople to “take the knee” in the wake of the death of George Floyd. In this hour-long docu, he reacts to a Yougov survey that revealed how only 12 per cent of 1,000 primary and secondary school teachers in Britain feel empowered to teach optional black-related topics. Troy says, “The importance of education at an early age, to inform identity and combat racist beliefs and stereotypes, cannot be understated.” And so he meets Nadhim Zahawi, the Secretary of State for Education, to talk about the positive impact of teaching black, ethnic and minority histories and experiences in schools. Along the way, the footballer also shares his own personal story and the challenges that he faced in school, which he feels may have been very different if the curriculum had been broader in scope.
