The Feast (CERT 18) ★★★★
93 MINUTES, IN CINEMAS 19 AUGUST STARRING: Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts, Julian Lewis Jones DIRECTOR: Lee Haven Jones
THE PLOT
In the Welsh countryside, politician’s wife Glenda (Roberts) has hired barmaid Cadi (Elwy) to help her with an important dinner party, attended by her husband, quarrelsome adult sons and two guests. Carnage gradually ensues.
WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT?
This Welsh-language horror film intrigues from the get-go, anchored by Annes Elwy as the mysterious, largely silent Cadi.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT?
The political subtext – Glenda’s family deserve punishment for cynically extracting mineral deposits from the farmland they inherited – is a tad heavy-handed.
VERDICT:
A UK cinema release slapped with a rare 18 rating, this gory folk horror will be best enjoyed by genre aficionados.
