Rhu man lays on one-man Burns Supper

A RHU shop owner treated guests at an Edinburgh casino to a one man Burns Supper prepared in just three days.

Robert Ryan of the Brae Shop in Rhu delighted attendees of the Maybury Casino event held on Burns Night.

Robert was initially only going to address the haggis but stepped up to do the whole Burns Supper after he found out the organiser was struggling to find performers.

Robert said: “I had done all the component parts before, but I had never done everything in the one evening.

“It was very enjoyable indeed and it’s something I’d be quite happy to do again.

“The management and staff of the casino were absolutely superb, the guests had a great night, and it seemed to all go down well so there was a bit of relief and certainly satisfaction for me that it worked out like that.”

To make up for the lack of a piper, Robert played music on his guitar and harmonica, addressed the haggis, gave a speech after the meal, and gave a toast to the lassies.

The Edinburgh event directly followed his performance at the Dumbarton and District MS Group’s Burns Lunch in Rhu’s Rosslea Hotel where he played music, recited poetry, and addressed the haggis.

The guests and organisers were thankful for the entertainment he provided.

Group coordinator Sheena Rollo said: “Everyone had a wonderful time, and we were very pleased and privileged to have Robert Ryan address the haggis.

“Robert was wonderful, he shared his amazing knowledge of Robert Burns telling the group lots of interesting historical facts relating to Robert Burns.

“He sang a few of Burns well-known songs and recited his poetry. [It was] an absolutely fabulous afternoon.”
