All in a day’s work

HARD-WORKING volunteers were not steered off by the windy weather at Cardross’ recent beach clean.

Around 20 volunteers came to help at Cardross Community Council’s beach clean on Saturday, April 13.

About 40 bags of waste were collected and among the more unusual items were a child’s chute and a comfy chair.

Bob Murray, of the community council, said: “The number of volunteers was down on previous events, no doubt owing to the unpromising weather on the day, which is chosen to suit the time of low tide.

“However, it did stay dry, but the wind made for some exasperating moments while filling the rubbish bags.

“We were once again joined by Alistair and Bob, two enthusiastic beach-cleaners who came along from Dumbarton to help out.

“Despite the fewer volunteers, we filled around 40 bags with rubbish and collected a variety of other items including a tyre, a traffic cone, a child’s chute and a comfy chair! As usual, much of the stuff we picked up was plastic.”

The event was also supported by Cardross CAN and Craig Callaghan of Argyll and Bute Council donated kit to the participants and organised the waste uplift.

The next clean up will take place in October 2024, with more details to be announced closer to the time.

Until then, Cardross Community Council encourages locals to pick up litter around the village in their spare time.

Bob added: “Our next beach clean will be held in October, but in the meantime we are grateful those who regularly walk along the shore and local roadsides picking up rubbish as they go.”

The community council’s beach cleans take place twice a year, with one in spring and one in autumn.
