Britney Spears calls for end to father’s control of her life
Britney Spears last week pleaded to be let out of the conservatorship that has kept her under her father’s control for 13 years, saying: “I just want my life back.”
Delivering a passionate and shocking statement to a Los Angeles court, the 39-year-old singer alleged she had been forced to perform against her will, drugged and not allowed to marry or have children with her long-term boyfriend Sam Asghari due to the legal arrangement.
“I truly believe that this conservatorship is abusive,” she said via audiolink. “I want to be able to get married to my boyfriend and have a baby but the conservatorship told me I can’t do that.
“I have an IUD [intrauterine device] inside me to prevent me from having a baby. I want to go to a doctor and take it out so I can have a baby, but they told me no.”
She added: “I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m okay and I’m happy. It’s a lie… I am traumatised… I’m so angry, it’s insane and I’m depressed. I cry every day.”
Britney’s father Jamie has been in charge of her finances, estate and person since 2008, when the conservatorship court order was granted after she was hospitalised following a public breakdown.
Following the hearing, Jamie’s legal team issued a statement saying: “He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in pain. Mr Spears loves his daughter very much.”
Britney’s testimony led to an outpouring of support on social media, with her former boyfriend Justin Timberlake writing: “After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time… What’s happening to her is just not right.”
