SAIRA KHAN’S PICK OF THE WEEK
‘
This is one of those stories that you think: “Oh my God! This is incredible!” I bet Darren Wordon and his family (above) thought something like this wasn’t ever going to happen to them. Darren paid £25 to enter the Omaze Million Pound House Draw, raising funds for the Prince’s Trust, and lo and behold, he won a beautiful £2.5m house in the Cotswolds. It really is a dream come true for them – as well as their home in Bath, they now also have a seven-bedroom property on 2.3 acres of land.
What I love about this is that when you read good news about somebody else, it makes you feel so happy for them. These sorts of stories take you to a different kind of headspace, which is about feeling positive and happy for other people. You feel a real generosity of spirit when you read things like this.
What is also really lovely is Darren initially gave money to a charity and as a result of doing that, he and his family got rewarded themselves.
I think the Prince’s Trust is absolutely outstanding. I’ve met people whose lives have been turned around because they were given a grant or help to get their business off the ground, so this is wonderful to highlight them, as well. It’s a really novel way to bring attention to the charity and it ended up raising £500,000, which is an absolutely massive sum.
Also, this story shows how charity fundraising has got
‘ to be taken to a different level for more people to want to get involved. I really believe in that whole thing that if you give, you don’t do it to receive, but something good will always happen to you. And I think the universe kind of sees that and, at some point, it usually comes back to you tenfold.
