SAIRA KHAN’S PICK OF THE WEEK
‘ When I look at this story, I think: “That is inspiration right there.” Margaret Seaman is a 92-year-old greatgreat grandmother from Norfolk who has spent two years knitting an incredible replica of the Queen’s residence in the county, Sandringham.
The 18ft masterpiece includes intricate architecture, trees, St Mary Magdalene church and even knitted members of the royal family.
The miniature Sandringham is now on display at the life-sized Sandringham Estate, where the Queen has seen the display and is said to have enjoyed it.
For Margaret to have got that acknowledgment from the Queen herself is just magical – the icing on the cake.
Margaret shows age is just a number. She is so creative. She is the best kind of influencer!
I draw a lot of wisdom and motivation from older people, who are often really well equipped with skills to get through hard times. Margaret is a great example of how, as a society, we need to go back to basics. It’s great that we’ve got all this technology, but sometimes it diverts us from simple things that bring us pleasure – such as knitting. I recently started knitting with my daughter and I find it’s a natural stress-buster. You can lose yourself in it and create something new.
It is also incredible that Margaret, who was knitting up to 15 hours a day during lockdown, has raised more than
‘ £3,500 for projects at three Norfolk hospitals, including a breast-cancer unit and a maternity bereavement suite.
I’ve shared this story with my kids, who were amazed. Margaret is part of a generation of people who show that being old does not mean you can’t contribute to society in the most meaningful of ways.
