HELLO! (UK)

IT’S GOOD TO TALK

-

Loneliness can be as detrimental to our health as a long-term illness and with an Office of National Statistics survey finding almost one in 14 people feel lonely, it’s a problem affecting many of us. The situation has got worse over the last year, with lockdown having a profound impact on residents in care homes, who often found themselves unable to see family or friends.

To counter this, telecoms service provider BT is rolling out its Care Home Companions initiative, which began in the NorthEast last year, across the UK. Volunteers will make weekly calls to care home residents to build friendships and help them feel comfortable and supported.

BT worker Bev Wilson, who helped to set up the scheme, says such friendships are needed now more than ever. “Even though lockdown restrictions are lifting, it’s still important to keep in touch with those who may be feeling lonely,” she says.
