HELLO! (UK)

PRINCE JULIAN OF SWEDEN is christened with parents Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia heading the distinguished guest list

CELEBRATE AS BABY JULIAN IS CHRISTENED

- REPORT: JANE DOWDESWELL

After making his entrance into the world almost five months ago, Prince Julian of Sweden was the centre of attention as he was baptised at the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace, surrounded by the love of his adoring parents Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia.

“Yesterday our beloved Julian was baptised,” they wrote on Instagram, with a photo of the family. “Thank you for all the best wishes!”

Looking perfectly content, Prince Julian Herbert Folke, Duke of Halland, was dressed in a lace gown first seen at his great-grandfather Prince Gustaf Adolf’s christening in 1906 and worn by Sweden’s royal babies ever since – including his own father at his baptism.

For the happy and historic occasion on 14 August, Princess Sofia looked beautiful in a white floral-print Etro sablé dress accessorised with a halo headband and off- white Stinaa. J heels designed by Stina Andersson – one of Prince Julian’s five godparents. Carl Philip, meanwhile, celebrated his military links with his uniform as a major in Sweden’s Amphibious Corps.

Their two elder sons, Princes Alexander, five, and Gabriel, four next week, wore matching navy shorts, white shirts and cream blazers.

ALL TOGETHER

They were joined by the rest of their family, led by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, together with Julian’s aunts and their husbands, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, and Princess Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill.

Also welcoming the latest arrival, who is seventh in line to the throne, were cousins including Victoria and Daniel’s children Princess Estelle, nine, and Prince Oscar, five, and Madeleine and Christopher’s trio Princess Leonore, seven, Prince Nicolas, six, and threeyear-old Princess Adrienne.

The service was carried out by Bishop Johan Dalman and Pastor Michael Bjerkhagen, while music included Swedish musicians Charlotte Runevret and Anders Neglin’s debut of their new song Little Beautiful You.

In traditional style, Carl Gustaf presented the little Prince with the sash of the Order of the Seraphim, Sweden’s order of chivalry. He will not wear it again until he is an adult.

When Julian was born on 26 March at Danderyd Hospital in Greater Stockholm, his delighted father announced: “We are so happy and grateful to be able to welcome our third son to our family. Princess Sofia and I, and his two big brothers, have all been longing for this day. And now we are looking forward to getting to know this new little member of our family.”

Julian is the King’s first grandchild not to have an HRH title since constitutional changes were made in 2019.
