SAIRA KHAN’S PICK OF THE WEEK

These images of young people taking part in the ‘

Shetland ponies race at the Mid-Somerset Show near Shepton Mallet last weekend are so cute. I know that if my children were there watching, it would inspire them. I’m certain that for my ten-year-old daughter Amara, seeing a girl her age riding a pony and taking part in a race – an activity she wouldn’t normally do – it would give her the confidence to have a go herself.

I’ve always raised my kids to understand you’ve got to be in it to win it. And, even if you don’t come out on top, everyone will be clapping for you, because you had the courage to take part. Competitions like these instil selfbelief and resilience in young people. A lot of children aren’t visible in the media; but where they are visible is in our local communities.

It’s so important for families to be a part of these agricultural shows. They bring to the forefront the importance of our heritage, farming, community and where our food comes from. At the Mid-Somerset Show, they had cider championships, awards for the best cheese, livestock, poultry, eggs… and even vintage cars!

There were also children’s competitions in floral art, photography and cookery. This is where little ones can learn and build on their knowledge outside of school. It’s a place to be inspired and educated. Being able to talk to someone who works in the industry helps kids

‘ visually learn and their experience might just trigger a passion within them. That could be the moment that changes the course of their life.

I’ve walked around these shows before, and they give me a real buzz of excitement. They show how amazing the local communities in our country are.
