7 DAYS A round-up of the week’s news

-

The Duke of Cambridge hailed first responders who “run straight towards the danger” last week, as he joined forces with former footballer David Beckham (together above) and Prime Minister Boris Johnson to honour the emergency services at the Who Cares Wins awards in London.

Addressing nominees and celebrity guests including host Davina McCall, Kate Garraway and Sir Rod and Lady Stewart, Prince William, 39, said: “Every day, our emergency services deal with highpressured, challenging situations. When most of us would, quite naturally, turn away and seek safety, our emergency responders rise to the occasion – running straight towards the danger to provide vital and often life-saving support.

“Very modestly, they will tell you that this does not make them heroes and it is all done in the name of duty. But sometimes, a situation will occur that tests the resolve of even the most experienced responder. In times like these, they must face their deepest fears and find the most astonishing level of courage to overcome the obstacles in front of them. And that is truly heroic.”

The Duke, a former Air Ambulance helicopter pilot, presented the 999 Heroes award to paramedics Deena Evans and Michael Hipgrave, who were stabbed while out on a routine call.

He also met Lucas Palmer, eight – who saved his four-year-old brother Louis’s life after he fell into a freezing river, diving in to rescue the youngster – and the rest of the nominees at the event, which was hosted by The Sun newspaper at The Roundhouse in Camden, North London.
