DREAM ESCAPES
With an ever-evolving art scene and a maze of wanderable streets, the cool Danish capital makes for a satisfyingly offbeat city jaunt
Copenhagen STAY
Having flung open its doors just last year in the century-old former Central Post Office headquarters, Villa Copenhagen (3) has to be one of the most sought-after stays in the city. You’ll find masterpieces by the likes of Jaume Plensa, Ian McKeever and Per Kirkeby dotted about the place, and it boasts commendable eco credentials, too.
TASTE (2),
At Sonny superfood-packed salads and tempting smørrebrød (open sandwiches) are washed down with thyme-infused lemonade. Spread across a number of spruced-up shipping containers in Refshaleøen, Reffen is home to a line-up of flavour-forward street eats, from Grillfisken’s lemony grilled mackerel to Thai plates from Holy Krapow. Meanwhile, artfully crafted treats at Lille Bakery are irresistible. As the day draws to a close, make a beeline for achingly cool Pompette – spilling out onto the pavement in trendy Nørrebro – to sip bold orange wine from the curated list of natural labels.
INDULGE
Lubarol houses a superb edit of covetable pieces from brands such as Proenza Schouler and Baserange, Aiayu majors in throwon-and-go cotton dresses, timeless knitwear and ethically made throws, rugs and bed linen, and at Shop Dora design-led glassware and colourful vintage knickknacks line the shelves.
EXPLORE
Rise early for an invigorating dawn dip at a harbour baths, then meander (or cycle) along the waterfront and on to lovely Fredericiagade ( 1) to admire the sun-dappled architecture. Frederik’s Church – with its towering marble pillars and gilded dome – is a sight to behold, the walls at Galleri Nicolai Wallner are hung with thought-provoking works, and Thorvaldsen’s Museum brims with statues and plaster moulds by the illustrious Danish sculptor.
