New hotel in ambitious plans for town regeneration
MAJOR plans for a new hotel, double-decker car park, health centre and a potential watersports centre have been revealed for Teignmouth.
The plan will have a massive impact on Teignmouth affecting car parking, tourism, the arts quarter, watersports clubs and the hospital consultation.
Teignbridge District Council’s executive unanimously agreed to move forward with a series of ambitious plans to regenerate the key Brunswick Street site.
A hotel looks set to be built on the site, with an additional £1.2m deck on the Quay Road Car Park to provide more car parking. A new health and wellbeing centre is subject to an upcoming NHS consultation.
As part of a Local Development Order, which outlines how the site is redeveloped, the 56 car parking spaces at Brunswick Street must be replaced before work can begin.
A range of proposals had gone before the executive, with the preferred option being a deck that would provide 65 spaces at the Quay Road car park, which would cost around £1.2m.
Subject to funding, replacement accommodation for the Teignmouth Arts Advisory Group would be found, and a feasibility study will also be carried out to investigate the idea for a watersports centre after the executive asked for further consultation to be carried out before going forward with the preferred Lower Point car park site.
Cllr Tim Golder, Teignbridge District Council’s executive portfolio holder for economy, assets and skills, said: “There is a great deal more work that needs to be done to move this forward, but the Brunswick Street regeneration is one of the most exciting projects for Teignmouth for many years to come.
“Brunswick Street has the potential to be a thriving place with improved facilities for all. This wide-reaching plan looks to secure new jobs, bring visitors to the town who will in turn support local businesses and visitor attractions, retain parking and offers some certainty for the Teignmouth Arts Advisory Group.”
