Friends plan memorial for popular chip shop couple

- BY COLLEEN SMITH

FRIENDS of a much-loved couple who ran a popular Torquay chip shop are planning a memorial event today.

Steven Collyer and Jason Roe, who ran Shiphay Chippy, died within weeks of each other. Steven, 52, died just six weeks after the death of his husband of 28 years. Jason had been ill for some time and friends said Steven could not carry on without him and ‘died of a broken heart’.

The couple had been a huge part of the emerging Cardiff gay scene where they started well-known bars and clubs.

But when Jason first became ill they moved to Devon where he was born and opened Shiphay Chippy.

Steven and Jason had become an important part of the community in Shiphay since opening the top-rated fish and chip shop.

Friends are planning an event in Torquay on the same day as a family funeral is being held in Steven’s native Wales.

One of the couple’s friends, Jade Smith, said: “In the last couple of months we have lost two amazing men, Steven Collyer and Jason Roe the proud owners of Shiphay Chippy.

“Steve and his beloved hus- band Jason made a lot of friends during their time here in Torbay and were admired, loved and cherished by many.

“Steven’s funeral is being held in his hometown Wales on Wednesday, September 26, and we know a lot of people who would like to pay their respects cannot be there. This will be held at Babbacombe Downs outside the theatre.I and a few others will be meeting at 6pm with fish and chips in hand, Steve’s favourite.”

Jade added:“We will be doing a candle light and bubbles release at 7pm. Anybody who would like to pay respects is welcome. The theme is Welsh so please wear something in red, green or white please.”
